Tim Atkin MW - Special Report South Africa 2021

Tim Atkin MW released his South Africa Report in September and we were delighted to be awarded First Growth status for the fourth consecutive year.

Our The Eleanor Chardonnay 2019, was also selected as one of the white wines of the year, a recognition the wine shares with both the Gravel Hill Syrah 2017 and The Mackenzie 2017 in the red wine category.

The following current releases are available through our estate and here online:

  • The Stork Shiraz 2017 – 94 – “Perfumed and concentrated, with blackberry, plum and tangerine fruit, lots of minerality and the structure to age in bottle.”
  • Hartenberg Merlot 2017 – 93 – “it’s minty, earthy and complex, with effortless concentration, taut acidity and fine tannins.”
  • Hartenberg Shiraz 2017 – 93 – “Big and bold … with iodine, cooked meat and spicy oak notes and plenty of grip.”

The following wines have not yet been released, but are available to reserve by emailing wine@hartenbergestate.com

  • The Eleanor Chardonnay 2019 – 95 – “… combines structure, intensity, concentration and precision. Finely oaked in 40% new wood, it has notes of lemon butter and cashew, lots of texture and a taut, stony finish.”
  • Hartenberg Riesling 2019 – 93 – “… good structure and minerality, lime juice freshness and a very dry finish.”
  • Hartenberg Chardonnay 2019 – 92 – “Mealy and savoury, with attractive lees, some aromatic spices … and a hint of butterscotch.”
  • Gravel Hill Syrah 2017 – 95 – “Violet and wild herb aromas segue into a palate that’s powerful, layered and perfumed, with serious Cornas-like tannins, compact dark berry fruit flavours, fresh acidity and well-integrated 80% new wood.”
  • The Mackenzie 2017 – 95 – “Bay leaf and mint aromas are your passport to a wine with inky depths, serious tannins, toasty 60% new wood and tremendous structure.”
  • The Megan 2017 – 94 – “Spicy, perfumed and textured, with stony freshness, scented 50% new wood and patisserie and red berry flavours.”
  • Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 – 93 – “This is a Cabernet with gravitas, showing aromas of mint and graphite, a serious, structured palate, granular tannins and a lift of minerality.”
