In 1968, Hartenberg became the first producer to bottle Shiraz in South Africa. Inspired by a visit to the Rhône Valley, Eleanor Finlayson established a block of Shiraz on the farm, and that block marked the beginning of a legacy that now spans over five decades.
Shiraz remains our most awarded varietal and the heartbeat of our cellar. The gravelly soils that cover parts of the estate have always favoured this variety – and we’ve spent decades learning how to refine that gift.
This is not just a wine we make. It’s a wine that defines us.
Gravel Hill Syrah is the cornerstone of Hartenberg’s winemaking legacy and a trailblazing wine in South Africa’s history.
A small vineyard parcel towards the lower estate slopes rests on a distinctive geological formation: a thin, 40 cm layer of brown, ferrous stones known locally as “koffie-klip” (coffee stone) overlaying a deep, fine clay subsoil.
This unusual soil structure plays a vital role in shaping the Gravel Hill Syrah. Through dry seasons, the clay beneath cracks, collecting water that sustains the vines during the hot summer months. When the rains return, the swelling clay prunes vine roots, reducing vigour and encouraging the production of small, intensely flavoured berries.
The wine typically shows notes of violets, perfume and white pepper on the nose, whilst the palate is classically structured and underpinned by stone-derived fine tannins.
Gravel Hill Syrah was South Africa’s first single-vineyard wine and was sold exclusively through the Cape Winemakers Guild for its first ten vintages, before returning to the estate fold as our flagship wine in 2005.
With a phenomenal reputation worldwide, known for its gradual development and longevity, we now celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Gravel Hill remains the benchmark for Stellenbosch Shiraz.
The Stork Shiraz honours the late Ken Mackenzie – pilot, businessman, farmer and benefactor. During World War II, Ken flew Spitfires under the call sign “Stork,” a nickname earned for his tall frame and spindly legs. He bought Hartenberg for one reason: he believed we made the best Shiraz in the country.
The Stork is made from a single vineyard planted on deep, red clay-rich “terra rossa” soils, just 800 metres from the Gravel Hill site but separated by a small stream and a world of difference in character. Where Gravel Hill grows in stony soils with shallow topsoil, the Stork’s vineyard has no stones and ripens nearly a month later. It’s a classic case of terroir showing its hand.
Initially considered too vigorous for premium Shiraz, the site became a proving ground – a risky choice for a variety that usually prefers poor, low-vigour soils. But using innovative techniques – including deep-rooted fescue grasses and devigouration canes – the vineyard team was able to control growth and focus flavour.
What emerged was a bold, black-fruited Shiraz with concentration, power, and depth. Picked ripe and made in a showy, New-World style, The Stork is plush, expressive and long-lived.
First bottled in 2003, The Stork has become one of South Africa’s most awarded Shiraz wines, with multiple top ten rankings at Syrah du Monde and five gold medals. It remains a bold expression of site – and a tribute to the man who made Shiraz central to Hartenberg’s story.
Hartenberg Estate Shiraz has been bottled every vintage since 1968, making it South Africa’s longest continuously bottled Shiraz. The journey began in 1964, when then-owner Eleanor Finlayson planted a small block of Shiraz after returning from a visit to France’s Rhône Valley. At the time, it was just the second recorded Shiraz planting in the country.
It was a bold and forward-thinking decision. Shiraz, still relatively unknown in South Africa, had shown its strength in warm climates and poor, gravelly soils – conditions that matched our Bottelary slopes. Eleanor believed the variety would thrive here, and it did.
Today, fruit is drawn from multiple blocks across the farm, grown on gravel, granite, and clay soils. These variations build complexity into the wine: some sites give perfume and grip; others bring depth and dark fruit.
Picking is timed for peak concentration. Rather than harvesting in the morning, the team picks in the afternoon heat – a technique inspired by Rhône growers. By then, the vine has drawn water from the berries, leaving smaller, more flavour-dense fruit.
Each bunch is hand-harvested and individually inspected in the vineyard. Damaged or sunburnt grapes are clipped off – what the team calls a “bunch clean-up”. At the cellar, they’re destemmed and passed through a second berry-level sort. This double selection ensures clarity and precision in the final wine.
Structured yet approachable, and consistently cellar-worthy, the Estate Shiraz reflects both the diversity of Hartenberg’s soils and the depth of its legacy.
The Gravel Hill terroir consistently provides a Syrah that is unique in character, quality and expression.
